The illuminated Estate

At the end of 2014, Parras Wines added value to its equity by acquiring property in the village of Redondo, Alentejo.

Initially, this acquisition consisted of 180 hectares of land in the so-called Monte da Candeeirinha, of which only 70 hectares represented vineyards for production. The surrounding cork oaks, holm oaks and orange trees remain, some of which are nearly two hundred years old.

Preserving the old vines was a priority of the wine-growing team and among the 27 hectares there are the Rabo de Ovelha, Arinto, Antão Vaz and Roupeiro in white grape varieties and in red grapes Aragonez, Alfrocheiro, Castelão, Alicante Bouschet and Trincadeira. In the remaining 43 hectares suitable for planting, the Gouveio, Encruzado, Verdelho and Viosinho white grape varieties can be found as also Syrah, Petit Verdot, Tinta Miúda, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional in red grape varieties. Their proximity to the Serra d'Ossa lends these lands temperature ranges that are very important for the distinctive qualities of the wines produced here, mainly the white wines, which are renowned for their freshness.

A year later, the Parras Wines project in Alentejo felt the need to acquire more land, and terrain was found in the area surrounding the Vigia dam that met the group's needs, i.e. that exhibited favourable characteristics for the production of red varieties, but more importantly, that was self-sustaining in water. It has an area of 200 hectares, the ground has a shale base, excellent for the production of red grapes, and by 2019 the goal is to fill 150 hectares with vines, consisting of only red grape varieties: Aragonês, Touriga Franca, Alicante Bouschet and Tinto Cão.

Parras Wines thus has almost 400 hectares of land in Alentejo, with 230 hectares available for the planting of vines. The preservation of the surrounding natural landscape, the enclosure of the Vigia reservoir and the house in the centre of Monte da Candeeirinha form part of the project that today has a common identity, based on the lamps that run throughout the central house and give light to the project, which is called: Herdade da Candeeira.

In 2016, the first wines were placed on the market from this house, which has already produced two vintages - in 2014 and 2015, called Portas da Candeeira, both white and red. They are the first terroirs to appear on our own Alentejo land and represent the opening range of that which will one day become the flagship wine of this Estate. 

However, the well-known brands of Parras - Montaria, Pêra Doce and Casas Brancas - will also fall under the Candeeira seal.
